Weighing Tire Brands

The number of tires brands available for ATVs and other off-road vehicles can be a little overwhelming at times. It seems as if ATV tires come and go rather quickly, and specialty brands will often appear for a short time, and then disappear. When looking for the tire that will be most successful for your ATV needs, it is important to consider how much use the tire will get, the weather conditions you expect to encounter, the type of terrain over which you will be driving, and where and how you plan to store your vehicle during the off-season.

The tire brands that seem to be the most successful across the board are those that were around at the beginning of the tire industry, including Goodyear ATV tires and Dunlop ATV tires. Carlisle ATV tires have also made their mark over the years, and Maxxis ATV tires, while comparatively young, have also been consistently well-ranked. Research is your best friend, and understanding the “where,” “how,” and “what” of your tire needs will go a long way toward insuring that you choose the brand that will be most successful for you.

How to Change an ATV Tire

Expenses when owning an ATV can quickly add up if you take your vehicle to a maintenance shop every time something needs to be installed or repaired.  Often, when purchasing new ATV tires, the store will charge a fee to mount them for you; but if you are familiar with using a few tools, and can follow instructions, you could be well on your way to saving that money by doing it yourself.

Step 1: First, remove the old wheel from the ATV and let the air out of the tire by removing the valve stem. You must then break the seal between the wheel and the tire with a bead breaker tool.

Step 2: After inserting two rim protectors a few inches from one another, wedge two tire irons between the wheel and the ATV tire, against the protectors. The tire irons should face opposite directions, as you are going to press on both tire irons at once, which will pull the tire and rim away from one another. Repeat this process far enough around the wheel until enough of the tire is over the lip of the wheel that it can be pried off with your hands.

Step 3: By now, we assume you have researched and purchased the right set of premium or discount ATV tires for your vehicle. At this point you are going to put the new tire on in the same manner you took the old tire off – just in reverse order. Use the rim protectors and tire irons in the same fashion. Soapy water can be sprayed onto the inside of the tire to facilitate this process.

Step 4: The final step is to fill the new ATV tires using an air compressor until you hear two loud pops, indicating that the tire bead has sealed. Replace the valve stem, inflate the tire to the correct tire pressure and re-mount onto your quad.

Piece of cake!

ATV Tire Development and Diversification

As business has gone global, especially over the course of the last twenty-five years, it has become increasingly important for large companies to diversify in order to turn a profit.  Tire manufacturers have not been immune to this necessity, and companies that once focused solely on car or motorcycle tires, now make tires and wheels for a wide-range of vehicles.  These include ATV tires, and tires for use on wheelbarrows, bicycles and trailers; as well as wheels for use on golf carts, ATVs and trailers.

Carlisle and Goodyear (the grandfather of all tire companies), for example, both now produce ATV tires, even though they began life primarily focused on other types of vehicles.  The development of ATV tire manufacturing and sales within these established companies is a blessing for ATV enthusiasts.  The research, development, and production of ATV tires by companies with a long history of excellent tire design, means that the tires currently going to market are top-of-the-line.  Great tires make for great rides, no matter where you are on the globe.

Safety from the Ground Up

Like any sport or outdoor hobby, ATV riding and racing can be dangerous.  For professional racers, learning how to fall, handling a skid, avoiding a crash into a group fellow racers who are already in the midst of a pile-up, or circumnavigating a bad patch of course without losing speed, are all part of training to compete at the upper levels.  For hobbyists, however, just getting out on your ATV and having fun takes precedence over competition.

The quality of your ATV tires can have a huge impact on the safety and quality of your ride, even just recreationally.  Take the time to research and test a number of brands before buying.  Make sure that the brand and style you purchase are appropriate for the type of terrain you plan to ride, and can handle the distance and speed you need them to.  Insuring a safe ride starts from the ground up, and taking some time to choose the right ATV tires will make your entire riding experience better in the long run.

The Global ATV Tire Industry

As with any product, manufacturers develop in multiple places around the globe.  Some countries or regions develop a reputation for making better, cheaper or more reliable products than others; but chances are, if someone is manufacturing something in New York, it is also being made in London, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Egypt.  This is the nature of commerce.  The same phenomenon is true of ATV tires

Particular brands of ATV tires have become popular in particular parts of the world, but the companies that manufacture those brands were often founded far away from their primary customer base.

Goodyear, manufacturer of Goodyear ATV tires, was founded in the U.S. in 1898.  Their tires have become famous around the world, and some are even found on space rovers for the NASA Mars exploration program.  Maxxis, manufacturer of Maxxis ATV tires, was founded nearly a century later, in 1967, in Taiwan.  Their tires are now popular in over 170 countries.  Dunlop, manufacturer of Dunlop ATV tires, was founded in Belfast, Ireland in 1888, and is synonymous with racing excellence.  These three companies, operating on different continents, and formed at different times, have grown to be three of the largest tire manufacturers in the world.

The Basics for Riding Your ATV In Winter

Most of the country has enjoyed an unseasonably warm winter, but Mother Nature may have another blizzard in store before all is said and done. You won’t hear most ATV enthusiasts are complaining, though.  Winter ATV riding can be extremely fun and challenging; but since it also carries risks, it is important to be prepared before you brave the cold and icy elements.

For starters, cold weather apparel is very important.  Plan for the worst by packing spare clothing, water, snacks, a first aid kid, and – even though it kind of detracts from the “exploring the wilderness” element – a cell phone.

Make sure your ATV battery is fully charged – nothing is worse than losing juice in the middle of a frozen tundra. And finally, make sure your ATV tires are properly inflated, as cold temperatures will lower your tire pressure, increasing the risk of puncture.

Bald ATV Tires

When tires are worn out they can become quite dangerous.  Bald tires are tires that have lost their tread due to wear and tear and do not grip the road in the same way that a tire with a functional tread can.  An ATV tire without tread can lead to hydroplaning and sliding, and can make sudden stops nearly impossible.  With ATVs, the quality and condition of your ATV tires play a huge part in the safety and overall quality of your ride, and the type of tires you use will depend upon the type of terrain you ride.

In general, bald tires should be avoided.  The exception to this rule is if you plan to be driving on sand, as smooth tires like the AMS Diamond Trak can help you stay on top of the sand, instead of digging down into it and becoming stuck.  Otherwise, if you realize that your tires are going bald, it is definitely time to get a new set.
